Povl Christian Balslev (www.povlbalslev.dk) was born in 1968 on the island of Fyn in Denmark. He studied organ at the Sweelinck Academy in Amsterdam under Professor Hans van Nieuwkoop and earned a Diploma in Church Music, Organ, and Composition from the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen with Professor Hans Fagius. He has participated in several masterclasses with renowned teachers, including Harald Vogel, David Sanger, Anders Bondeman, H.O. Ericsson, William Porter, Jon Laukvik, and Lars Ulrik Mortensen.
Balslev holds a Carillonneur Diploma from the Nordic School of Carillon in Løgumkloster, Denmark. He has performed concerts throughout all the Nordic countries as well as in various European countries, Japan, Argentina, Canada, and the USA.
As a composer, Balslev has written numerous pieces of church music, organ works, choral music, carillon music, chamber music, and compositions for theater, opera, film, and computer games. He is also the author of a book about Danish composers Th. Aagaard and Oluf Ring, exploring their relationship with composer Carl Nielsen, as well as several articles on music.
Balslev has received several awards, including the Svendborg Municipality Cultural Prize in 2014 and the Funen Cultural Prize in 2016. Since 2002, he has served as Music Director, Cantor, and Carillonneur at Our Lady's Church in Svendborg, Denmark.
